15 Quranic verses of prostration - List of ahaadeeth

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Narrated Amr ibn al-'As:
The Prophet (ﷺ) taught me fifteen prostrations while reciting the Qur'an, including three in al-Mufassal and two in Surah al-Hajj.  [Sunan Abi Dawud 1401]

1-al A'raf 7:206

"Indeed, those [angels] who are near to your Lord do not disdain to worship Him; they glorify Him, and to Him they prostrate."

The marfoo’ hadeeth from Abu’l-Darda’ is da’eef (weak); the mawqoof hadeeth from Ibn ‘Umar and Ibn ‘Abbaas is saheeh and was narrated by ‘Abd al-Razzaaq. The scholars are unanimously agreed on the prostration in this soorah, as it says in Tafseer Ibn Katheer.

2-ar Ra'd 13:15
"To Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and on earth, willingly or unwillingly, and so do their shadows in the morning and evening."

The hadeeth is mawqoof from Ibn ‘Umar and Ibn ‘Abbaas, saheeh in ‘Abd al-Razzaaq.

3-an Nahl 16:49
"To Allah prostrates all that is in the heavens and on earth of living things, and so do the angels; and they do not show arrogance."

Narrated Rabi`a:
`Umar bin Al-Khattab recited Surat-an-Nahl on a Friday on the pulpit and when he reached the verse of Sajda he got down from the pulpit and prostrated and the people also prostrated. The next Friday `Umar bin Al-Khattab recited the same Sura and when he reached the verse of Sajda he said, "O people! When we recite the verses of Sajda (during the sermon) whoever prostrates does the right thing, yet it is no sin for the one who does not prostrate." And `Umar did not prostrate (that day). Added Ibn `Umar "Allah has not made the prostration of recitation compulsory but if we wish we can do it." Sahih al-Bukhari 1077

4- al Israa 17:109
"They fall down on their faces weeping, and it increases their humility."

An authentic mawqoof report from Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbaas (radiyallaahu 'anhum). Reported by 'Abdur Razzaaq (i.e. in his musannaf).

5- Maryam 19:58
"... Whenever the verses of the Most Compassionate were recited to them, they fell down in prostration, weeping."

It is mawqoof from Ibn ‘Umar and Ibn ‘Abbaas in ‘Abd al-Razzaaq, and Ibn Katheer narrated that there was consensus concerning it.

6- 7-
al Hajj 22:18
"Do you not see that to Allah prostrate all those who are in the heavens and all those on earth: the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures, and many humans?"

al Hajj 22:77
"O you who believe, bow down and prostrate, worship Your Lord and do good, so that you may succeed."

Uqbah bin Amir narrated:
"I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Surah Al-Hajj has been esteemed by two prostrations?' He said: 'Yes, and whoever does not prostrate for them, he should not recite them.'" [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 578]

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi, the mawla of Ibn Umar that a man from Egypt told him that Umar ibn al-Khattab recited Surat al-Hajj (Sura 22) and prostrated twice in it, and then said, "This sura has been given special preference by having two prostrations in it. [Muwatta Malik:485]

The hadeeth on the first prostration is an authentic mawqoof report from Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbaas (radiyallaahu 'anhum). Reported by 'Abdur Razzaaq. And the narration on both prostrations is a mawqoof report from 'Amr Ibn al-'Aaas but there is weakness therein. However, there is a supporting report to it from 'Uqbah bin 'Aamir and Khaalid bin Ma'daan. It is authentically mawqoof from 'Umar and his son 'Abdullaah, Abud Dardaa', and Abu Musa al-Ash'aree (radiyallaahu 'anhum). Ishaaq said: For seventy years I have seen people prostrating the two prostrations in soorat al-Hajj.

8- al Furqan 25:60
"When it is said to them, “Prostrate to the Most Compassionate,” they say, “What is ‘the Most Compassionate?’ Shall we prostrate to what you order us?” And it only increases them in aversion."

The hadeeth is mawqoof from Ibn ‘Umar and Ibn ‘Abbaas, saheeh in ‘Abd al-Razzaaq.

9- an Naml 27:25-26
"so that they do not prostrate before Allah Who brings forth what is hidden in the heavens and earth, and Who knows all that you conceal and all that you reveal.Allah; none has the right to be worshiped except Him, the Lord of the Mighty Throne"

The hadeeth is mawqoof from Ibn ‘Umar and Ibn ‘Abbaas, saheeh in ‘Abd al-Razzaaq.

10- as Sajdah 32:15
"The true believers in Our verses are only those who, when they are reminded of them, fall in prostration and glorify their Lord with praise, and they do not show arrogance."

Ibn ‘Umar said:
God’s Messenger was reciting as-Sajda (Al-Qur’an; 32) when we were with him. He was prostrating himself and we were doing so along with him, but we were so crowded that none of us could find a place for his forehead when prostrating himself. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1076 , Sahih Muslim 575a.)

On Fridays the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite Alif Lam Mim Tanzil-As-Sajda (in the first rak`a) and Hal ata `alal-insani i.e. Surat ad-Dahr (LXXVI) (in the second rak`a), in the Fajr prayer. Sahih al-Bukhari 1068

11- Saad 38:24
"... Then David realized that We were only testing him, so he asked his Lord for forgiveness, fell down bowing, and turned to Him in repentance."

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:The prostration of Sa`d is not a compulsory one but I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) prostrating while reciting it. Sahih al-Bukhari 1069

12- Fussilat 41:38
"But if they show arrogance, then those [angels] who are with your Lord glorify Him night and day, and they never grow weary."

Its hadeeth is mawqoof from Ibn ‘Umar and Ibn ‘Abbaas, saheeh in ‘Abd al-Razzaaq.

13- an Najm 53:62
"So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him]."

Narrated `Abdullah bin Mas`ud:
The Prophet (ﷺ) recited Surat-an-Najm (53) and prostrated while reciting it and all the people prostrated and a man amongst the people took a handful of stones or earth and raised it to his face and said, "This is sufficient for me. Later on I saw him killed as a non-believer." Sahih al-Bukhari 1070

14- Inshiqaq 84:21
"and when the Qur’an is recited to them, they do not prostrate?"

Narrated Abu Rafi':
I offered the night prayer behind Abu Hurairah. He recited Surah Inshiqaq ("When the sky is rent asunder") and prostrated himself. I asked him: What is this prostration ? He replied: I prostrated myself on account of this (surah) behind Abu al-Qasim (i.e. the Prophet). I shall continue prostrating on account of this till I meet him. (Sunan Abi Dawud 1408)

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that when, the son of Adam recites the Ayat of Sajdah (prostration) and then falls down in prostration, the Satan goes into seclusion and weeps and says:Alas, and in the narration of Abu Kuraib the words are: Woe unto me, the son of Adam was commanded to prostrate, and he prostrated and Paradise was entitled to him and I was commanded to prostrate, but I refused and am doomed to Hell. (Sahih Muslim 81a)

15- al 'Alaq 96:19
"No indeed; do not obey him, but prostrate and draw near [to Allah]."
We performed prostration along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (as he recited these verses: )" When the heaven burst asunder" and" Read in the name of Thy Lord" (al-Qur'an, xcvi. 1).  Sahih Muslim 578c

Terminology:
Marfoo': "raised," a narration attributed to the Prophet .
Mawqoof: "stopped," a narration from a companion.
Mufassal: means the “last seventh of the Qur’aan,” and it starts from soorat Qaaf (#50) to the last soorat of An-Naass (#114).

What Should One Say In Prostration ?
O Allah, it is to Thee that I prostrate myself and it is in Thee that I affirm my faith, and I submit to Thee. My face is submitted before One Who created it, and shaped it, and opened his faculties of hearing and seeing. Blessed is Allah, the best of Creators (Sahih Muslim 771a)

Munqidh said, "In most of the gatherings of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar, he would face qibla. Once Yazid ibn 'Abdullah ibn Fusayt recited Sajda after sunrise. He prostrated and the people there prostrated with the exception of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar. When the sun rose, 'Abdullah uncurled his legs and then prostrated. He said, 'Did you see the prostration of your companions? They prostrated at a time when the prayer should not be done." (Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1137)
