Companion with us
In the Name of ALLAH the Most Beneficent and the Most Merciful
Allaah's messenger said:
“Every one of you has been assigned a companion from among the jinn and one from the angels…” Collected by Ahmad in al-Musnad and Sahih Muslim, vol. 4, p. 1472, no. 6758).
These angels are entrusted with the responsibility of guiding and advising each individual, by Allaah’s will, to righteousness.
The Qur’aan also speaks about the guardian angels in Soorah Ar-Ra‘d, [13:11]
“For each [person] there are [angels] in succession before and behind him. They guard him by Allaah’s command…”
We are all sinful. The Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam said: The angel on the left does not write down anything until six hours have passed after a Muslim does a bad deed. If he regrets it and asks Allah for forgiveness, he casts it aside [does not write it down], otherwise he writes down one (sayi’ah/bad deed).” This means that when you sin, you have 6 hours to repent and ask Allah for forgiveness. Therefore, when you feel weak and fall into sin, repent immediately, show Allah your remorse and ask Him for forgiveness and He will forgive you. If you also add to that good deeds, that would increae your chances. Allah says: Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds.

Strong Muslim -A Qur'anic Analysis...
Who is a Qawi ( Strong) Muslim ? A Qur'anic Analysis...
by Nisaar Y. Nadiadwala on Thursday, 30 August 2012 at 10:54 ·
A Hadith from Abu Hurraira “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both. Guard over that which benefits you, seek Allah’s Assistance, and don’t lend yourself to things devoid of benefit, and if something befalls you, then don’t say ‘If I only would have done such and such,’ rather say ‘Allâh ordained this and He does what He wills’ for verily the phrase ‘If I would have’ makes way for the work of the Devil.”.The hadith is Sahih
Who is a strong Muslim? If you read the hadith closely, some of the qualities of a strong Muslim are already mentioned :
1..Guard over that which benefits you . The Qur'an says : Guard your Salah. The understanding is easy. If you guard your salah by being regular and punctual then you are a strong Muslim. If you establish Salah upon your wives and children then you are a strong Muslim. The vice versa is also the same. If you want to become a strong Muslim then establish your salah . Doesn't Salah benefit you? Refer to verse 45 of Surah Ankaboot: Indeed Salah stops you from Immodesty and Munkar ( That which is forbidden)
2. Seek Allah's Help: If Allah helps you, nobody can over power you.... One cannot be strong without Allah's help. Most of us remember Allah only when we are weak, but don't look up-to Him for help when we are influential, politically and financially strong. We rely on our sources. This is not a sign of a strong Muslim.
3. Don’t lend yourself to things devoid of benefit : Most of our energy is wasted in things that are not concerned to our life or hereafter. Our gossips about sports and movies , have nothing to benefit us. Saving time and energy is also a way of strengthening your self.
4. If something befalls you, then don’t say ‘If I only would have done such and such,’ rather say ‘Allâh ordained this and He does what He wills'
Inorder to understand how this noble advice adds to our strength refer to the 153 verse of Surah al Baqarah, When a calamity befalls upon them they say Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi rajeoon.. Indeed we are from Allah and to Him we shall return.. The phrase before the verse assures.. wa bashhirissabireen... and give glad tidings to the patient...Lesson? Sabr makes you strong. Sabr is observed in different situations:
1. Sabr in Ebadaah: If you are worshiping punctually then be stead fast and continue doing so. Be it salah or Nawafil or Qur'an recitation or charity or helping people.. be punctual. Don't be lethargic and give up after few days or months or years.
2. Sabr in calamity : If you tolerate your loss then it saves you from hypertension, depression and many other psychological hardships.
3. Sabr over Sins : Many a times we decide to abstain from a habitual sin we are into. For a few days we carry on abstaining from it but soon we get lenient and finally we find ourselves back into it. It may be gheebah, it may be habits of watching movies or any haram that we are into.
4. Sabr in Tolerating people: We all have our shortcomings. We must take into consideration that others too have their shortcomings. So the Qur'an guides us : Kinds words and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury... Surah al Baqarah. verse 263.

Polygamy & PolyAndry in Islam
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
Question:
Why is a man allowed to have
more than one wife in Islam? i.e. why is
polygamy allowed in Islam?
Answer:
1. Definition of Polygamy
Polygamy means a system of
marriage whereby one person has more than one
spouse. Polygamy can be of two
types. One is polygyny where a man marries
more than one woman, and the
other is polyandry, where a woman marries
more than one man. In Islam,
limited polygyny is permitted; whereas polyandry
is completely prohibited.
Now coming to the original
question, why is a man allowed to have more than
one wife?
2. The Qur’an is the only
religious scripture in the world that says,
“marry only one”.
The Qur’an is the only
religious book, on the face of this earth, that contains the
phrase ‘marry only one’. There
is no other religious book that instructs men to
have only one wife. In none of
the other religious scriptures, whether it be the
Vedas, the Ramayan, the
Mahabharat, the Geeta, the Talmud or the Bible does
one find a restriction on the
number of wives. According to these scriptures one
can marry as many as one
wishes. It was only later, that the Hindu priests and
the Christian Church restricted
the number of wives to one.
Many Hindu religious
personalities, according to their scriptures, had multiple
wives. King Dashrat, the father
of Rama, had more than one wife. Krishna had
several wives.
In earlier times, Christian men
were permitted as many wives as they wished,
since the Bible puts no
restriction on the number of wives. It was only a few
centuries ago that the Church
restricted the number of wives to one.
Polygyny is permitted in
Judaism. According to Talmudic law, Abraham had
three wives, and Solomon had
hundreds of wives. The practice of polygyny
continued till Rabbi Gershom
ben Yehudah (960 C.E to 1030 C.E) issued an
edict against it. The Jewish
Sephardic communities living in Muslim countries
continued the practice till as
late as 1950, until an Act of the Chief Rabbinate of
Israel extended the ban on
marrying more than one wife.
(*Interesting Note:- As
per the 1975 census of India Hindus are more
polygynous than Muslims. The
report of the ‘Committee of The Status of
Woman in Islam’, published in
1975 mentions on page numbers 66 and 67 that
the percentage of polygamous
marriages between the years 1951 and 1961
was 5.06% among the Hindus and
only 4.31% among the Muslims. According
to Indian law only Muslim men
are permitted to have more than one wife. It is
illegal for any non-Muslim in
India to have more than one wife. Despite it being
illegal, Hindus have more
multiple wives as compared to Muslims. Earlier, there
was no restriction even on
Hindu men with respect to the number of wives
allowed. It was only in 1954,
when the Hindu Marriage Act was passed that it
became illegal for a Hindu to
have more than one wife. At present it is the Indian
Law that restricts a Hindu man
from having more than one wife and not the
Hindu scriptures.)
Let us now analyse why Islam
allows a man to have more than one wife.
3. Qur’an permits limited
polygyny
As I mentioned earlier, Qur’an
is the only religious book on the face of the earth
that says ‘marry only one’. The
context of this phrase is the following verse from
Surah Nisa of the Glorious
Qur’an:
“Marry women of your choice,
two, or three, or four; but if ye fear that
ye shall not be able to deal
justly (with them), then only one.”
[Al-Qur’an 4:3]
Before the Qur’an was revealed,
there was no upper limit for polygyny and
many men had scores of wives,
some even hundreds. Islam put an upper limit
of four wives. Islam gives a
man permission to marry two, three or four women,
only on the condition that he
deals justly with them.
In the same chapter i.e. Surah
Nisa verse 129 says:
“Ye are never able to be fair
and just as between women....”
[Al-Qur’an 4:129]
Therefore polygyny is not a
rule but an exception. Many people are under the
misconception that it is
compulsory for a Muslim man to have more than one wife.
Broadly, Islam has five
categories of Do’s and Don’ts:
(i) ‘Fard’ i.e. compulsory or
obligatory
(ii) ‘Mustahab’ i.e.
recommended or encouraged
(iii) ‘Mubah’ i.e. permissible
or allowed
(iv) ‘Makruh’ i.e. not
recommended or discouraged
(v) ‘Haraam’ i.e. prohibited or
forbidden
Polygyny falls in the middle
category of things that are permissible. It cannot be
said that a Muslim who has two,
three or four wives is a better Muslim as
compared to a Muslim who has
only one wife.
4. Average life span of females
is more than that of males
By nature males and females are
born in approximately the same ratio. A
female child has more immunity
than a male child. A female child can fight the
germs and diseases better than
the male child. For this reason, during the
pediatric age itself there are
more deaths among males as compared to the
females.
During wars, there are more men
killed as compared to women. More men die
due to accidents and diseases
than women. The average life span of females
is more than that of males, and
at any given time one finds more widows in the
world than widowers.
5. India has more male
population than female due to female
foeticide and infanticide
India is one of the few
countries, along with the other neighbouring countries, in
which the female population is
less than the male population. The reason lies in
the high rate of female
infanticide in India, and the fact that more than one
million female foetuses are
aborted every year in this country, after they are
identified as females. If this
evil practice is stopped, then India too will have
more females as compared to
males.
6. World female population is
more than male population
In the USA, women outnumber men
by 7.8 million. New York alone has one
million more females as
compared to the number of males, and of the male
population of New York
one-third are gays i.e sodomites. The U.S.A as a whole
has more than twenty-five
million gays. This means that these people do not
wish to marry women. Great
Britain has four million more females as compared
to males. Germany has five
million more females as compared to males. Russia
has nine million more females
than males. God alone knows how many million
more females there are in the
whole world as compared to males.
7. Restricting each and every
man to have only one wife is not
practical
Even if every man got married
to one woman, there would still be more than
thirty million females in U.S.A
who would not be able to get husbands
(considering that America has
twenty five million gays). There would be more
than four million females in
Great Britain, 5 million females in Germany and nine
million females in Russia alone
who would not be able to find a husband.
Suppose my sister happens to be
one of the unmarried women living in USA, or
suppose your sister happens to
be one of the unmarried women in USA. The
only two options remaining for
her are that she either marries a man who
already has a wife or becomes
'public property'. There is no other option. All
those who are modest will opt
for the first.
Most women would nto like to
share their husband with other women. But in
Islam when the situation deems
it really neccessary Muslim women in due faith
could bear a small personal
loss to prevent a greater loss of letting other Muslim
sisters becoming 'public
properties'.
8. Marring
a married man preferable to becoming 'public property'
In Western society, it is
common for a man to have mistresses and/or multiple
extra-marital affairs, in which
case, the woman leads a disgraceful, unprotected
life. The same society,
however, cannot accept a man having more than one
wife, in which women retain
their honourable, dignified position in society and
lead a protected life.
Thus the only two options
before a woman who cannot find a husband is to
marry a married man or to
become 'public property'. Islam prefers giving
women the honourable position
by permitting the first option and disallowing the
second.
There are several other
reasons, why Islam has permitted limited polygyny, but
it is mainly to protect the
modesty of women.
2. POLYANDRY
Question:
If a man is allowed to have
more than one wife, then why does Islam prohibit a
woman from having more than one
husband?
Answer:
A lot of people, including some
Muslims, question the logic of allowing Muslim
men to have more than one
spouse while denying the same ‘right’ to women.
Let me first state
emphatically, that the foundation of an Islamic society is justice
and equity. Allah has created
men and women as equal, but with different
capabilities and different
responsibilities. Men and women are different,
physiologically and
psychologically. Their roles and responsibilities are different.
Men and women are equal in
Islam, but not identical.
Surah Nisa’ Chapter 4 verses 22
to 24 gives the list of women with whom
Muslim men can not marry. It is
further mentioned in Surah Nisa’ Chapter 4
verse 24 “Also (prohibited are)
women already married”
The following points enumerate
the reasons why polyandry is prohibited in
Islam:
1. If a man has more than one
wife, the parents of the children born of such
marriages can easily be
identified. The father as well as the mother can
easily be identified. In case
of a woman marrying more than one husband,
only the mother of the children
born of such marriages will be identified and
not the father. Islam gives
tremendous importance to the identification of
both parents, mother and father.
Psychologists tell us that children who do
not know their parents,
especially their father undergo severe mental
trauma and disturbances. Often
they have an unhappy childhood. It is for
this reason that the children
of prostitutes do not have a healthy childhood.
If a child born of such wedlock
is admitted in school, and when the mother
is asked the name of the
father, she would have to give two or more names!
I am aware that recent advances
in science have made it possible for both
the mother and father to be
identified with the help of genetic testing. Thus
this point which was applicable
for the past may not be applicable for the
present.
2. Man is more polygamous by
nature as compared to a woman.
3. Biologically, it is easier
for a man to perform his duties as a husband despite
having several wives. A woman,
in a similar position, having several
husbands, will not find it
possible to perform her duties as a wife. A woman
undergoes several psychological
and behavioral changes due to different
phases of the menstrual cycle.
4. A woman who has more than
one husband will have several sexual
partners at the same time and
has a high chance of acquiring venereal or
sexually transmitted diseases
which can also be transmitted back to her
husband even if all of them
have no extra-marital sex. This is not the case
in a man having more than one
wife, and none of them having extra-marital
sex.
The above reasons are those
that one can easily identify. There are probably
many more reasons why Allah, in His Infinite Wisdom, has
prohibited polyandry.

Qunoot
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
Qunoot: carries several meanings, e.g. humility, devotion. What is meant here is the special supplication while standing during prayer.
There are 2 types of Qunoot
1.) Normal Qunoot Done in the Witr Prayer
2.) Qunooth Naadhila done in times of difficulty
For the Qunooth in times of difficulty there are various Hadith in Sahih Bukari and Sahih Muslim that Prophet (sallallahu Alihiwasallam) used to supplicate in last part of Fajr and Magrib prayers.
Qunoot in Witr
Abu Hawra reported that Sayyidina Hasan ibn Ali said, “Allah’s Messenger taught me some expressions that I might recite them in witr?’:
(O Allah! Guide me among those whom You have guided, and preserve me among those whom You have preserved. And take me as a friend among those whom You have befriended, and bless me in that which You have bestowed
(upon me). And protect me against the evil that You have ordained, for, indeed, You are the One who ordains and none can otdain against You. And, indeed, never is he disgraced whom You take for a friend. Blessed are You, 0 our
Lord! Andexalted are You!).

Abu Salama b. Abd al-Rahman b. 'Auf heard Abu Huraira say:
(When) Allah's Messenger () (wished to invoke curse or blessing on someone, he would do so at the end) of the recitation in the dawn prayer, when he had pronounced Allah-o-Akbar (for bending) and then lifted his head (saying):" Allah listened to him who praised Him; our Lord! to Thee is all praise" ; he would then stand up and say:" Rescue al-Walid b. Walid, Salama b. Hisham, and 'Ayyash b. Abd Rabi'a, and the helpless among the Muslims. O Allah! trample severely Mudar and cause them a famine (which broke out at the time) of Joseph. O Allah! curse Lihyan, Ri'l, Dhakwan, 'Usayya, for they disobeyed Allah and His Messenger." (The narrator then adds): The news reached us that he abandoned (this) when this verse was revealed:" Not for you (O Muhammad SAW, but for Allah) is the decision; whether He turns in mercy to (pardons) them or punishes them; verily, they are the Zalimun (polytheists, disobedients, and wrong-doers, etc.). Fast Ramadaan and celebrate Eid with Muslims in your country/region...
Fast Ramadaan and celebrate Eid with Muslims in your country/region...
by Shawana A. Aziz on Thursday, 19 July 2012 at 13:45 ·
explanation by
- Shaikh Saleh ibn Fawzan al-Fawzaan (audio excerpt)
- Shaikh Muhammad ibn Saleh ibn al-Uthaimeen (rahimahullah) from Fatawa Arkaan al-Islam (p. 451)
Translated by Shawana A. Aziz
-COMMITTED to SPREADING the Deen in the WORDS of the scholars
___________________________
Shaikh Saleh ibn Fawzan al-Fawzan (hafidhahullah) was asked whether is it permissible to fast with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia if one were to be living in Algeria although the days of the beginning of Ramadaan differ between in those countries, and with whom should one celebrate Eid?...
Shaikh Saleh ibn Fawzan al-Fawzan (hafidhahullah) explained in light of the Hadeeth of Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), in the following words:
"Fast when you see it (i.e., the crescent moon of Ramadaan), and stop fasting when you see it (i.e., the crescent moon of Shawwal)." [See, Saheeh al-Bukharee (Eng.) book. 31, no. 124]
So, Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) tied the obligation of fasting with the sighting of the new moon - and this varies according to the moon-sighting (in different countries/regions)...
and there is no doubt that moon-sighting in Algeria differs from moon-sighting in the Saudi.
So, every person fasts with the people of his region/country, in which he is.
(and) If they see the crescent, he stops fasting with them.
Your ruling is (the same as) the ruling of the Muslims, with whom you live - whichever region it be - whether; Algeria or any other - You begin your fasts with them, and you stop fasting with them." [end quote of Shaikh Saleh ibn Fawzan al-Fawzaan]
_________________________
Shaikh Muhammad ibn Saleh Ibn al-Uthaimeen (rahimahullah) was asked about those who call for uniting the Ummah in fasting, and that the moon-sighting all over the world be based upon the moon-sighting in Makkah, he (rahimahullah) replied,
"This is impossible in terms of astronomical observations because moon-sighting, as Shaikhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (rahimahullah) said, differs (in different countries) - as the astronomers agree (too).
So, if moon-sighting differs, then according to the Daleel (proofs) of the reports/texts (of the Deen) and the observed/scientific proofs, every country must have its own ruling.
The Daleel (proof) of the reports/texts (of the Deen):
Allah says,
"So whosoever of you witnesses the month (of Ramadaan), he must observe faststhat month." [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 185]
So, if it so happens that the people in the other further parts of the earth do NOT witness the month - i.e., al-Hilaal (the new crescent of the month of Ramadaan) while the people of Makkah witness the Hilaal, then HOW can the words of this verse apply to them if they have NOT witnessed the month?!
and Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said,
"Fast when you see it (the new moon), and stop fasting when you see it (the new moon)." [Agreed upon]
So, for instance, if the people of Makkah see the new moon, then HOW can we necessitate the people of Pakistan and other countries further towards East to fast - although we KNOW that the Hilaal has NOT appeared in their sighting - and the Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) has tied the fasting to moon-sighting?
Even according to the observed/scientific proof, this understanding is correct and cannot be contradicted.
We know that Fajr (dawn) appears in the eastern parts of the earth before the West. So,
- is it required from us to stop ourselves (from eating) while we are (still) in night?
the answer is: NO.
- if the sun sets in the east, and we are (still) in the day, is it permissible for us to break our fast?
the answer is: NO!
so, al-Hilaal is like the sun exactly.
The Hilaal, its timings are monthly, and the sun, its timings are daily.
and the One, Who said,
"Eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your fast till the nightfall." [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 187]
also said,
"So whosoever of you witnesses the month (of Ramadaan), he must observe fasts that month." [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 185]
Thus, according to the proofs of the reports/texts (of the Deen) and observed/scientific proofs, it is required that
- we establish separate rulings (for each region/country) with regards to when the fasts begin and when they end.
- we tie it to the perceptual sign (i.e., witnessing the moon) which Allah has assigned as sign (for the beginning and ending of fast) in His Book, and His Prophet has assigned as sign in His Sunnah - namely; witnessing the moon, witnessing the sun or the Fajr.

What is the Time of Iftar?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
We all know the Command from our Beloved Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) that one has to hasten the Iftar.
SahI ibn Sad reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, "The people will not cease to prosper as long as they hasten to break the fast".
[Bukhari 1957, Muslim 1098, Jami Tirmidhi:699, Ibn Majah:1957,Ahmed22868 ]
Abu Atiyah narrated that he and Masruq (RA) visited Ayshah (RA) and they said to her, "0 Mother of the Believers! There are two men among the Companions of Muhammad (SAW) one of whom hastens to break the fast and hastens to pray while the other delays to break the fast and delays prayer. She asked, "Which of them hastens the iftar and hastens the salah?" They disclosed that he was Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) and she said, "This is what Allah's Messenger did". The other man was Abu Musa (RA).
[Muslim 1099,Tirmidhi: 702 Abu Dawud : 2354, Nisai: 2154 ,Ahmed :2155]
From the Above Hadith it is very clear that one has to hasten to break fast.
Now the question is how fast?
1.) Sunset time
2.) After the Sun has Set
3.) Wait for 10 Minutes after the Sun has set (fasting time table distributed in most Masjid)
To know the exact time, lets take an aribitary example of sun set time which is 6.36 PM.
Use case 1, the fast needs to be broken at 6.36 PM
Use case 2 the fast needs to be broken 6.36 +2 minutes i.e 6.38 PM (Note 2 mins for sunset according to http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-iarticle_query?1922PA.....30..213F&data_type=PDF_HIGH&whole_paper=YES&type=PRINTER&filetype=.pdf
it takes approximately 3 minutes to break fast.. )
Use case 3: Adding 10 mins to Sunset time i.e. 6.42,6.45 etc...
What are the proofs?
Narrated ‘Umar bin Al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه : Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "When night falls from this side and the day vanishes from this side and the sun has set, then the person observing Saum (fast) should break his Saum." Sahih Bukari: 1954
Narrated ‘Abdullaah bin Abi Awfaa رضي الله عنهما : We were in the company of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم on a journey and he was observing Saum (fast), and when the sun has set, he addressed somebody, "O so-and-so, get up and mix Saweeq with water for us." He replied, "O Allaah’s Messenger! (Will you wait) till it is evening?" The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Get down and mix Saweeq with water for us." He replied, "O Allaah’s Messenger! (If you wait) till it is evening." The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said again, "Get down and mix Saweeq with water for us." He replied, "It is still daytime." The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Get down and mix Saweeq with water for us." He got down and mixed Saweeq with water for them. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم drank it and then said, "When you see night falling from this side, the fasting person should break his Saum (fast)." Sahih Bukhari #1955
Also found in Sahih Muslim : 2007 and 2008
And Jami Tirmidhi 634
Sayyidina Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, "When night approaches and the day ends and the sun disappears, break your fast".
[Ahmed231, Bukhari 1954, Muslim 1100, Abu Dawud 2351]
All of the Hadith uses the Word Ghabathis Shamsu ( وَغَابَتْ الشَّمْسُ)
Shamsu means sun
Ghabathi comes from Root word Ghaib (غيب) means invisible, hidden, absent . Waghbathi means "and it/they/she be absent" . This is a Third person, female gender and singular word.
Case 3 cannot be correct as in the Hadith of Ayesha (RA) Abu Musa (RA) delayed the Iftar and the Magrib Salah .
Uqbah ibn Aamir Juhanni (RA) said, "There are three hours when Allah's Messenger disallowed to offer salah or bury our dead: when the sun rises till it is fairly high, when it is overhead till it has gone past the meridian and at sunset as it goes down till it has set. [Muslim 831, Jami: Tirmidhi :1032, Ahmed17382, Abu Dawud 3192, Nisai 559, Ibn Majah 1519]
It is prohibited to Pray during Sunset time and Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) would not have prayed when the sun set's. So case 1 cannot be correct as well.
Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that the Prophet (SAW) said, "Jibril led me in Salah twice near Bayt Allah. ....... We offered maghrib after sunset when the fasting man takes iftar (breaks his fast)" [Tirmidhi: 149,Ahmed 3081, Abu Dawud 393]
You can get the sunset time for you area from timeanddate.com.
According to them "Sunset is when the last part of the Sun is about to disappear below the horizon (in clear weather conditions). http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/aboutastronomy.html
Add 3 mins to get Islamic Timings.
"It is called for the Maghrib prayer when the sun is completely folded behind the horizon, plus 3 minutes by precaution."

http://praytime.info/index.php
"The above times are based on calculations only. Please allow +/- 3 minutes for Fajr, 1 minute for Dhuhr, and 2 minutes for Maghrib as a precaution."
"Sunset (some calculators suggest 1 to 3 minutes after Sunset for precaution)"

IMPORTANT:
Note that there are many Ramadhan timetables calendar, indicating the time of Iftaar which is earlier than the actual sunset and the sun would not have set at the time indicated.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, describing a dream that he had seen: “… until I was at the mountain, where I heard loud voices. I asked, ‘What are these voices?’ They said, ‘This is the howling of the people of Hellfire.’ Then I was taken [to another place], and I saw people hanging from their hamstrings, with the corners of their mouths torn and dripping with blood. I said, ‘Who are these?’ They said, ‘The people who broke their fast before it was the proper time to do so,’ i.e., before the time of iftaar.” (Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/420)
Sheik Uthaymeen Rahimullah says "Break your fast when the sun has set."
Ref: http://fatwa-online.com/fataawa/worship/fasting/fas005/9991121_3.htm and the fast has to be broken after the sunset has complete.

The Fast becomes Void if broken before the sun has disappeared and to delay breaking the fast is Makrooh..
