بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
It is highly recommended to attend the Eid Khutbah that happens after the Eid Salah. But at times the Eid Qhutbah is lengthy and in many cases boring, or sometimes for Eid-Al-Adha where we need to finish the Sacrifice, then know that for both the Eid's attending Khutbah is a choice given by Prophet(ﷺ) himself.
Narrated Abdullah ibn as-Sa'ib:
I attended the 'Id prayer along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). When he finished the prayer, he said: We shall deliver the sermon; he who likes to sit for listening to it may sit and he who likes to go away may go away.
Abu Dawud said: this is a mursal tradition (i.e. the successor 'Ata directly reporting from the Prophet (ﷺ) and omitting the link of the Companions). Sunan Abi Dawud 1155 -Sahih (Al-Albani) , Sunan Ibn Majah 1349 Sahih (Darussalam)
The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) in the above Hadith granted a concession allowing those who attended the Eid prayers either to sit and listen to the khutbah, or to leave. Imam Al-Shawkaani (may Allah have mercy upon him) said in ‘al-Nayl: al-Musannif ’ said: “This (Hadith) shows that the khutbah is Sunnah; if it is was obligatory, it would be obligatory to sit and listen to it.”
Marwan said, "People do not sit to listen to our Khutba after the prayer, so I delivered the Khutba before the prayer." and started delivering Khutbah before EID prayer which was rejected by Sahaba. [Sahih al-Bukhari 956]
