The Power of the Du'a of the Oppressed

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once said:

"Fear the supplication of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between it and Allah."
(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to Mu`adh bin Jabal when he sent him to Yemen
"Be afraid of the curse of an oppressed person as there is no screen between his invocation and Allah"(Sahih al-Bukhari 4347)

Umar bin Al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) said: Don't oppress the Muslims and ward off their curse (invocations against you) for the invocation of the oppressed is responded to (by Allah) (Sahih al-Bukhari 3059)

This means that when someone is treated unfairly or hurt by others, and they raise their hands and ask Allah for help — Allah listens right away. There is no wall, no screen, no waiting.

Why Is the Du'a of the Oppressed So Special?

When someone is wronged, their heart is broken. Their pain is real. And Allah, who is the Most Just and the Most Merciful, never ignores such a voice. He listens to them and answers in the best way.

Let’s look at how this happened in the lives of some of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ.

1. Dua of Prophet (ﷺ)
Narrated `Abdullah: While the Prophet (ﷺ) was prostrating, surrounded by some of Quraish, `Uqba bin Abi Mu'ait brought the intestines (i.e. Abdominal contents) of a camel and put them over the back of the Prophet. The Prophet (ﷺ) did not raise his head, (till) Fatima, came and took it off his back and cursed the one who had done the harm. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O Allah! Destroy the chiefs of Quraish, Abu Jahl bin Hisham, `Utba bin Rabi`al, Shaba bin Rabi`a, Umaiya bin Khalaf or Ubai bin Khalaf." (The sub-narrator Shu`ba, is not sure of the last name.) I saw these people killed on the day of Badr battle and thrown in the well except Umaiya or Ubai whose body parts were mutilated but he was not thrown in the well. (Sahih al-Bukhari 3854)

2. Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (رضي الله عنه) – His Du'a was always answered

Sa’d was known as one of those people whose du'a never missed. Once, someone falsely accused him of being unjust. Sa’d was hurt, so he prayed to Allah for truth to come out.
What happened? Not long after, the liar was exposed, and Sa’d’s name was cleared. The Prophet ﷺ had said about him:
Narrated Sa'd: that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "O Allah, respond to Sa'd when he supplicates to You. (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3751)

Narrated Jabir bin Samura:
The People of Kufa complained against Sa`d to `Umar and the latter dismissed him and appointed `Ammar as their chief . They lodged many complaints against Sa`d and even they alleged that he did not pray properly. `Umar sent for him and said, "O Aba 'Is-haq! These people claim that you do not pray properly." Abu 'Is-haq said, "By Allah, I used to pray with them a prayer similar to that of Allah's Apostle and I never reduced anything of it. I used to prolong the first two rak`at of `Isha prayer and shorten the last two rak`at." `Umar said, "O Aba 'Is-haq, this was what I thought about you." And then he sent one or more persons with him to Kufa so as to ask the people about him. So they went there and did not leave any mosque without asking about him. All the people praised him till they came to the mosque of the tribe of Bani `Abs; one of the men called Usama bin Qatada with a surname of Aba Sa`da stood up and said,

"As you have put us under an oath; I am bound to tell you that Sa`d never went himself with the army and never distributed (the war booty) equally and never did justice in legal verdicts."

(On hearing it) Sa`d said, "I pray to Allah for three things: O Allah! If this slave of yours is a liar and got up for showing off, give him a long life, increase his poverty and put him to trials." (And so it happened). Later on when that person was asked how he was, he used to reply that he was an old man in trial as the result of Sa`d's curse.

`Abdul Malik, the sub narrator, said that he had seen him afterwards and his eyebrows were overhanging his eyes owing to old age and he used to tease and assault the small girls in the way. (Sahih al-Bukhari 755)

3. Dua of Khubaib (رضي الله عنه)
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent an espionage mission of ten men under the leadership of 'Asim bin Thabit Al-Ansari (May Allah be pleased with him). Khubaib had killed Al-Harith bin 'Amir on the day (of the battle of) Badr. So, Khubaib remained a prisoner with those people.
When they took him out of the Sanctuary (of Mecca) to kill him outside its boundaries, Khubaib requested them to let him offer two rak`at (prayer). They allowed him and he offered Two rak`at and then said, "Hadn't I been afraid that you would think that I was afraid (of being killed), I would have prolonged the prayer. O Allah, kill them all with no exception." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3045)

4. Dua of Sa'id bin Zaid bin 'Amr bin Nufail

'Urwah bin Az-Zubair (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Arwa bint Aus brought a suit against Sa'id bin Zaid bin 'Amr bin Nufail (May Allah be pleased with him). She complained to Marwan bin Al-Hakam that he had wrongfully taken possession of a portion of her land. Sa'id said: "How can I take a portion out of her land while I have heard a denunciation from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." Marwan asked him: "What did you hear from the Messenger of Allah?" He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, 'He who takes a span of land unjustly will be made to wear seven earths round his neck on the Day of Ressurection'." Marwan said to him: "I don't seek proof from you after this." Sa'id supplicated: "O Allah! If she is a liar, deprive her of her eye sight and cause her to die in her land." 'Urwah said: "She did not die till she became blind. While she was walking in her land (concerning which the dispute arose) she fell down into a pit and died."
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Leaning on the wrongdoer is forbidden

Do not incline to the wrongdoers, or else the Fire will seize you. Then you will have no protectors besides Allah, nor will you be helped. (11:113)

`Ali bin Abi Talhah said that Ibn `Abbas said, "Do not compromise with them." Ibn Jarir said that Ibn `Abbas said, "Do not side with those who do wrong."
This means, "Do not seek assistance from wrongdoers, because it will be as if you are condoning their actions (of evil)."

In this verse, leaning on means inclination, comfort, friendliness and mercy. Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَ)  forbids such an act, because if you incline towards the wrongdoer and believed in him, he would involve you with him. But if you keep away from him and do not lean on him, he would feel that you lean on a strong base. Therefore, do not lean on him until he understands that you have confidence in Allah  and His Ability to take on the wrongdoer. At that time, he would feel weakened. One of the evils of the present life is leaning on the wrongdoers and helping them in their wrongdoing. He who does so does not notice that Allah is capable to cause the collapse of the wrongdoer and of all his tyranny and power.

Why does Allahتَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَ  warn us not to lean on the wrongdoer?
This is because we did not confront him. Rather, we have assisted him in his wrongdoing, and if he had been challenged in the first time he has committed an act of injustice, he would have desisted from his wrongdoing. What encouraged him was people’s assistance to him, out of fear, and he did not find anyone who can challenge him. One of the highest degrees of supporting the wrongdoer is finding someone who beautifies his wrongdoing to people. Such beautification helps to propagate injustice. Leaning on the wrongdoer has several forms, and any prevalent injustice in the world today was due to people’s assistance to the wrongdoer and beautification of his deeds; and had they challenged him from the very beginning, his injustice would not have prevailed.

Allah proceeds to say: {You have no protectors apart from Allah {Hud'. 113), meaning that there is no one who can protect you, except Allah .Therefore, do not lean on those who do wrong nor seek their assistance. For Allah is your only helper and supporter, therefore, obey him and do not go beyond Him in search for another protector

Narrated Abu Bakr As-Siddiq:
"O you people! You recite this Ayah: Take care of yourselves! If you follow the guidance no harm shall come to you from those who are astray (5:105). I indeed heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: 'When the people see the wrongdoer, and they do not stop him (from doing wrong), then it is soon that Allah shall envelope you in a punishment from Him.'" ( Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3057 Sahih)

If the sin transgresses against others, then denouncing it is more urgent then an evil which affects only the person who does it. What matters is that the Muslim’s heart should remain aware and denounce the evil even if he is unable to take action or speak out against it. But the one who can change the evil by taking action or speaking out against it should not fail to do so.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
Denouncing evil in one's heart is obligatory for everyone, because everyone can do it. What is means is hating the evil and keeping away from those who do it when one is unable to denounce it by taking action or speaking out, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And when you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qur’aan) by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaytaan (Satan) causes you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers)” [al-An’aam 6:68]

And Allaah says in Soorat al-Nisa’ (interpretation of the meaning):  “And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Qur’aan) that when you hear the Verses of Allaah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them” [al-Nisa’ 4:140]

And He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And those who do not bear witness to falsehood, and if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity” [al-Furqan 25:72] i.e., they do not witness it or attend such gatherings.
Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz (3/212, 213).

Conditions for Good Deeds

1. Believe in ALLAH

“And We shall turn to whatever deeds they (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners) did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust” [al-Furqaan 25:23]

'A'isha reported: I said: Messenger of Allah, the son of Jud'an established ties of relationship, fed the poor. Would that be of any avail to him? He said: It would be of no avail to him as he did not ever say: O my Lord, pardon my sins on the Day of Resurrection.  [Sahih Muslim 214]

2. One should do Dua for aiding in doing act of workship.

Allahumma a'inni ala dhikrika, wa shukrika, wa husni 'ibadatika

Mu'adh b. Jabal reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) caught his hand and said:By Allah, I love you, Mu'adh. I give some instruction to you. Never leave to recite this supplication after every (prescribed) prayer: "O Allah, help me in remembering You, in giving You thanks, and worshipping You well." (Abi Dawud: 1522)

3. Should be done with Iklas for ALLAH alone

They were commanded only to worship Allah with sincere devotion to Him, being inclined to true faith, and to establish prayer and give zakah; that is the true religion
[al-Bayyinah 98:5]

Who spends his wealth to purify himself, not in return for someone’s favors, but to seek the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. [al-Layl 92:18-20]
We feed you only for the sake of Allah; we seek from you neither reward nor gratitude.  [al-Insan 76:9]
Whoever seeks the harvest of the Hereafter, We will increase for him his harvest; and whoever seeks the harvest of this world, We will give him thereof, but in the Hereafter he will have no share. [al-Shura 42:20]
Those who seek the life of this world and its splendor, We will repay them in full in this life for their deeds, and nothing will be diminished from them therein. It is they who will have nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire. All their efforts will be worthless, and all their deeds will be futile.
[Hud 11:15-16]

4. In accordance with Quran and Sunnah

Should be in accordance with the only way which Allah has prescribed for worship, which is by following the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  in the laws that he has brought.

Narrated Aisha:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If somebody innovates something which is not in harmony with the principles of our religion, that thing is rejected." (Sahih al-Bukhari 2697, Sahih Muslim 1718a)

 Narrated Irbad ibn Sariyah:
A man said: Messenger of Allah! It seems as if it were a farewell exhortation, so what injunction do you give us?
He(ﷺ)   said: I enjoin you to fear Allah, and to hear and obey even if it be an Abyssinian slave, for those of you who live after me will see great disagreement. You must then follow my sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs. Hold to it and stick fast to it. Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error.  (Abi Dawud 4607)

5. Acceptance of good deed

It was reported that 'Ali ibn Abu Taalib(may Allaah be pleased with him) said: "Be more concerned about the acceptance of your deed than you are about the performance of the deed itself; did you not hear: "Allaah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him]." [5:27]

“And they who give what they give [of charity] while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord.” [Al-Mu’minūn 23:60]

Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin [Sa'eed bin] Wahb - that is Al-Hamdani:

that 'Aishah the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "I asked about the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about this Ayah: And those who give that which they give with their hearts full of fear... (23:60)" 'Aishah said: "Are they those who drink Khamr and steal?" He said: "No, O daughter of As-Siddiq. They are those who fast, perform Salat, give charity while they fear that their Lord will not accept it from them: It is these who hasten to do good deeds, and they are the foremost of them (23:61)." [Tirmidhi: 3475, Sunan Ibn Majah: 4338]

After every good deed pray for acceptance

And [remember] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and Ishmael, [saying], “Our Lord, accept this from us, for You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

6. Consistent is the key

Narrated `Aisha  (May Allah be pleased with her): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464)

7. Preserve accepted Deed

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Do you know who is the bankrupt?" They said: "The bankrupt among us is one who has neither money with him nor any property". He said, "The real bankrupt of my Ummah would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with Salat, Saum and Sadaqah (charity), (but he will find himself bankrupt on that day as he will have exhausted the good deeds) because he reviled others, brought calumny against others, unlawfully devoured the wealth of others, shed the blood of others and beat others; so his good deeds would be credited to the account of those (who suffered at his hand). If his good deeds fall short to clear the account, their sins would be entered in his account and he would be thrown in the (Hell) Fire". [ Sahih Muslim 2581 ,Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2418]

Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Whoever has wronged his brother, should ask for his pardon (before his death), as (in the Hereafter) there will be neither a Dinar nor a Dirham. (He should secure pardon in this life) before some of his good deeds are taken and paid to his brother, or, if he has done no good deeds, some of the bad deeds of his brother are taken to be loaded on him (in the Hereafter). [Sahih al-Bukhari 6534]

The Power of the Du'a of the Oppressed

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once said: "Fear the supplication of the oppressed, for there is no b...
